In this post I want to teach you another way you can make you own baby blankets. This time, I’ll let you know how to create baby receiving blankets. Most of them that are available in stores don’t meet your expectations or are too expensive; so why not making them yourself? The process won’t take long, approximately 20 or 30 minutes and you will be able to decorate them just the way you want and your baby will have unique and personalized baby blankets.

You will need to make a baby receiving blanket:

a soft piece of fabric

a measuring tape

a sewing machine

and about a half of hour of your time:)

Baby receiving blankets usually come in two sizes: 35 square inches for babies that have less than 3 months and 45 square inches for babies older than 4 months.
When I want to make baby receiving blankets, first I think of how many do I need. I usually do two at one time, because it is easier after I cut the material and get two pieces of fabric suitable for two blankets. Establish the size of the blankets and cut the fabric. Remember the sizes that I mentioned earlier.

Once you have the fabrics ready, you’ll have to curve the edges. You can easily do that with the help of a large circular lid. Place it on the corner of the soon-to-be blanket and with a piece of chalk outline the the outer edge of your lid. Then cut the corner following the chalk line. Repeat this process for all four corners.

Now you have to do the edging. This can be done by folding the bottom edges of the blanket and sewing them with the sewing machine so the the fabric won’t fray.

Congratulation, your baby receiving blankets are done now. If want to give them a more unique look, you can sew something cute on them like your baby’s name, flowers or different characters. Be creative and the result will be something amazing that your baby will love!

Let’s see what mothers all around the US have to say when it comes to making their very own baby receiving blankets.

Cindy, Memphis, Tennessee: I used to buy baby blankets when I was a young mother. When I saw that they tend to get pretty expensive, I started making my own. I love to personalize my baby blankets with all kind of cartoon characters that my little boy likes.

Jenna, Lincoln, Nebraska: I tried this method and indeed, it is really fast to do. The personalized baby receiving blanket turned out just great!

Christy, Phoenix, Arizona: Yes, this is a great way to make baby receiving blankets. I do not own a sewing machine, so I sew the edges by hand. It takes more time, but the result is still great.

We continue our “how to make baby blankets” course with another great lesson about creating your baby great personalized baby blankets. No sewing is needed (young mommies are thrilled, probably) and they are very easy to make.

The tools that you will need for the making of the baby blanket:

30 x 40 inches piece of fabric (I used fleece for mine). The color is your choice.

Straight pin

Small paintbrush

Sharp scissors

Ruler

Masking tape

Fabric paint (again, your choice)

Alphabet letter stamp

Shape stamp (I used a flower shape stamp)

Let the “personalizing” begin!

A 30 inch long piece of masking tape in needed. Along one of the edges mark with a ruler 0,5 inches intervals.

About 2,5 inches from the 30 inches edge of the baby blanket, place the masking tape. Because it will be used as a mark to make the fringes, be sure that the tape is stretched.

Now you will have to cut the 0,5 inches fringes along the side of the blanket’s edge.

The same steps have to be followed for the other side of the personalized baby blanket.

The center of one fringed side has to be marked with a pin 2 inches from the top of the fringe.

Let’s say you want to write your baby’s name initials on the blanket. For this step, you have to apply paint to the baby’s letter stamp initial using a brush that has to be pressed carefully onto the blanket. Above the pin, you have to stamp the baby’s middle initial, and on the sides the first and last initials.

After this, stamp the figures that you chose (I for one went with flowers) on the sides of the monogram initials (you can also paint his name on the baby blanket, it’s all up to you, the process is the same). The colors of the figures are up to you as well.

I trimmed the flowers with small dots of paint (inside the flower and outside of it and that was it!

Of course, there are many many other ways how you can make personalized baby blankets. Stay tuned for new tips on making your own baby blankets. Until then, let’s see what mommies around the US have to say about the baby blankets that they’ve made.

Jessica, Carson City, Nevada: I like to make little Timothy’s baby blankets myself because they are easy to do and the cost is extremely low. The one’s that you buy in stores are way too expensive, and let’s not forget the economical climate that we are living in.

Danielle, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma: I like to paint little red hearts on the baby blankets that I make. I love them and my baby does too.

Mary, Austin, Texas: Fringes. I’m crazy about fringes. Every personalized baby blanket that I make has to have them. And of course, the colors of the paint are usually green and red.

We showed you in a previous post how to knit your own baby blankets and I think that was a very helpful mini-guide for all the mothers out there that want to make something unique and special for their babies. Not to mention that the knitted blanket would be also a great present. Today, we’ll forget about sewing and we’ll make a fleece baby blanket that is (again) perfect for a gift or for your child. Oh, and did I mention that it is incredibly easy to manufacture?

These are the items that you will need to make a fleece baby blanket without sewing:

fleece fabric – two pieces (You would need two pieces of fabric for each side of the blanket. You can have them with the same or different colors (I would recommend different colors). Tip: if you don’t want to have too much trouble cutting the fleece, make sure that it is not too thick)

scissors – very sharp; they will become useless after you will use them for this fleece blanket

paper clips

tape

And these are the steps you have to follow in order to complete your fleece baby blanket:

After you have bought your two pieces of fleece fabric, cut them to equal pieces. The size of the material is your option.

Lay the pieces of fabric on top of each other, use the paper clips to hold them together and make sure that they don’t move.

Cut the four corners of the two pieces of material.

Cut the Corners

It’s time to start cutting the fringes of the fleece baby blanket. The length and wide of the fringes are up to you, but a 4 inch length and a 1 inch wide should be just fine. Also, try cutting as straight as you can, but that is not always a must. (you can use to ruler to make sure that the fringe has the right size).

Cutting Fringes

Now you have to tie the fabrics together, but only the pieces that were cut (fringes, of course). Use one fringe from each fleece. Pay extra attention to this process so you don’t have to go back and untie. You can use one knot, but if you do a double one, it won’t untie that easy when you wash the blanket.

Tie the Fringes

When one side of the blanket is ready, flip it over and finish knotting the remaining fringes, as shown.

Tie the Fringes on the Other Side Too

Now that one side of the blanket is ready, follow the steps for the other three remaining sides and this is how your baby blanket should look like in the end, if you have followed exactly these advices.

Handmade Tie Fleece Baby Blanket

We talked in the previous post about the things you have to keep in mind when you want to buy your baby a blanket. But what if you are a person that holds the gift of knitting and sewing?

The answer is easy. You can make your own baby blanket, with fabrics, colors and printings at your choice.

In the first place, you have to choose about 12 oz. medium weight acrylic yarn. Soft and in pastel colors I think would be the right choice.

When it comes to knitting needles, i suggest using sizes 10 and 11. If you want to be sure of the one that suites you the best, knit some practice shapes with the both of them and after that you’ll know which one is more suitable for your baby blankets knitting process.

Don’t forget that some knitting stitch markers always come in hand. You will see below why.

Remember that this article is for those of you who know how to handle a knitting needle. This is how I think it will work best and this is the method that I used several times when I knitted baby blankets:

A. You have to cast on 120 stitches and make the border of the blanket by knitting 10 rows.

B. Try using this method when doing the next 1 to 10 rows. Row 1: Knit 7, then with the marker do the side border. To the last 7 stitches purl, mark the spot then Knit 7. On the second row, simply knit. For row 3, knit 7, purl to marker, the place another marker and knit 7. Row 5 is identical to row 3: knit 7, purl to marker, the place another marker and knit 7. For rows 6 to 10, Knit.

This method should be repeated in a total of 14 times, but be careful to end it with row 5. 10 rows should be knitted as in section A and then you can cast off the knitting. After you have read this article, knitting baby blankets doesn’t seem like a difficult job after all, right? Now you can make on your own perfect baby blankets for your little one or personalized baby blankets for when you need a present for baby showers.
