Today I want to show you how you can make in a very easy way a simple soft and cozy dot chenille baby blanket. This method is going to seem a piece of cake for experienced sewers and even beginners.

You are going to need:

a sewing machine

thread

soft and comfortable chenille fabric – two pieces, one yard each (in different colors, if you want)

First of all, wash the fabric and dry it on a normal cycle. Next step is to lay one piece of fabric with the textured side facing up, like in the picture.

The other piece of fabric has to be laid facing down on top of the first one and make sure that you align them so they are perfectly one on top of each other, but with the “good“ sides facing each other.

With a pair of scissors or a very sharp rotary knife trim the edges of the fabrics so that it will have matching-up straight edges and then pin around them to keep them together.

Using a sewing machine make 1/2 inch seams around the outside of the square, but on one side, leave an opening of about 10 inches.

Pink chenille blanket

By reaching in through that opening, pull out the blanket’s ”good” sides out. If you have to push the corners out, you can use a long spoon handle, for example.

Now it’s time to close the opening. You can do that by, of course, sewing it with the sewing machine, but make sure that the difference is not visible, because, remember, now the sewed part that we made in the beginning is now on the inside of the baby blanket.

For the grand finale, you can sew a steam of about a half of inch around the side of the blanket and make look as pretty as possible.

Once this is done too, you can tie the baby blanket with a ribbon and that would make a great present for a new mom. Out of all the baby blankets she will receive, I guarantee that this one she will like the most!

Jennifer, Salt Lake City, Utah: Yes, these are one of my favorite baby blankets. They are soft, cozy and my little Daniel simply adores them!

Corinne, New York: I tried this method also and it is indeed very easy to make. I do not have a lot of experience with the sewing machine, but I was able to manage it. And when I offered the baby blanket as a gift at a baby shower, the mom was delighted.

Danielle, Columbia, South Carolina: I gave birth to a baby girl two months ago and I got many blankets like this one. They are excellent, It’s all I can say!

I’m back with another great way to make your own baby blankets. This time, cashmere baby blankets made from old sweaters. As you know, cashmere is probably one of the softest fabric out there that will offer your baby a great feeling of comfort and warmth. If you have some old cashmere sweaters in the house it’s perfect, if not, grab some from your local thrift store. I’m telling you, the result will be great!

You will need for this project:

about 6 adult-sized cashmere sweaters

two zippered pillowcases

a washing machine and a dryer

scissors and measuring tape

straight pins and a sewing machine

1-1/3 yards of flannel fabric

a hand-sewing needle and thread

an iron

The first step is to divide the 6 sweaters in two groups of three and put them in each pillowcase. Why putting them in the pillowcases? Because now you’ll have to wash the sweaters and the zippered pillowcases will protect the washing’s machine hoses from the fuzz that will come off from the cashmere sweaters. Choose the hottest cycle that the washing machine. When the washing is over, dry the sweaters with a hot dryer.

Now you have to cut the sweaters at the seams. Once this is done, lay the resulted pieces flat. Cut a total of 42 7 inch squares from the sweaters. Putt them on a flat surface and arrange them like this: six squares across by seven down.

What you need to do now is to put the right hand edge of the top row from the square a 1/4 (quarter) inch under the left-hand of the second row of the square and pin the edges that are overlapping; after this, zig-zag stitch over them. The remaining squares from the row must be attached in the same way. Also, the squares from the remaining six rows.

Once you have completed this step, lay 1-1/3 yards of flannel with the right side up on the work surface. Put the sewn cashmere blanket on top of the flannel and pin the edges of the blanket on to the flannel. With a 1/4 inch seam allowance, sew the edges that are pinned, but leave an opening of about 6 inches on one edge.

Now cut the flannel around the edges that are sewed and turn the cashmere blanket through the six inch opening. Then stick the opening and iron the blanket’s edges. The final step is to stitch around the edges of the cashmere baby blanket.

And there you go. You have a great and comfortable blanket made out of old cashmere sweaters that I am sure your baby will enjoy. And let’s not forget that these type of baby blankets make perfect presents for baby showers or birthdays.

I showed you in the previous post how you can easily make baby receiving blankets. Hoping that lesson was a good one, I have something else prepared for you. I want to give you some great tips on how to use the many baby receiving blankets that you probably have in your cupboard.

Of course, their main purpose is to keep you baby warm. If your baby is a little bit cold, you can lay an extra one on him until the temperature of the body gets to a comfortable level; then you can remove it.

When it comes to swaddling a baby, that’s what baby receiving blankets are:). Read our advices on how to swaddle a baby in a baby blanket to learn more about this.

Baby receiving blankets can be also used as burp cloths. They are larger than normal burp cloths and that means that they can cover and protect better your clothes from the mess that a baby might make when you a burping him.

Another great way that I used baby receiving blankets in was for cleaning the milk that my baby dropped while I was breast feeding him. Also, with another blanket, I created a cover to get some privacy while I the baby was eating.

You can use a light blanket to cover your baby when the sun is too hot and that should also protect him from insects.

If you want to change your baby on a public surface and you want to be sure that he won’t get any germs, lay a baby receiving blanket on that surface and so, your baby will be ok.

Playtime can also take place on a baby blanket, especially if the playground is not in your house where you are sure that everything is clean.

You can roll baby receiving blankets up and use them to position your baby in a car seat or baby crib. Place a rolled blanket on each side of the baby’s head in order to make sure that it stays straight in the car seat. Also, if you place the rolled baby blankets on each side of the baby’s body when he is in the crib, this will prevent him from rolling on the side or on his tummy.

I know that these are just a few ways you can use your baby blankets. If you want to point out other methods, please feel free to share them with us.

In this post I want to teach you another way you can make you own baby blankets. This time, I’ll let you know how to create baby receiving blankets. Most of them that are available in stores don’t meet your expectations or are too expensive; so why not making them yourself? The process won’t take long, approximately 20 or 30 minutes and you will be able to decorate them just the way you want and your baby will have unique and personalized baby blankets.

You will need to make a baby receiving blanket:

a soft piece of fabric

a measuring tape

a sewing machine

and about a half of hour of your time:)

Baby receiving blankets usually come in two sizes: 35 square inches for babies that have less than 3 months and 45 square inches for babies older than 4 months.
When I want to make baby receiving blankets, first I think of how many do I need. I usually do two at one time, because it is easier after I cut the material and get two pieces of fabric suitable for two blankets. Establish the size of the blankets and cut the fabric. Remember the sizes that I mentioned earlier.

Once you have the fabrics ready, you’ll have to curve the edges. You can easily do that with the help of a large circular lid. Place it on the corner of the soon-to-be blanket and with a piece of chalk outline the the outer edge of your lid. Then cut the corner following the chalk line. Repeat this process for all four corners.

Now you have to do the edging. This can be done by folding the bottom edges of the blanket and sewing them with the sewing machine so the the fabric won’t fray.

Congratulation, your baby receiving blankets are done now. If want to give them a more unique look, you can sew something cute on them like your baby’s name, flowers or different characters. Be creative and the result will be something amazing that your baby will love!

Let’s see what mothers all around the US have to say when it comes to making their very own baby receiving blankets.

Cindy, Memphis, Tennessee: I used to buy baby blankets when I was a young mother. When I saw that they tend to get pretty expensive, I started making my own. I love to personalize my baby blankets with all kind of cartoon characters that my little boy likes.

Jenna, Lincoln, Nebraska: I tried this method and indeed, it is really fast to do. The personalized baby receiving blanket turned out just great!

Christy, Phoenix, Arizona: Yes, this is a great way to make baby receiving blankets. I do not own a sewing machine, so I sew the edges by hand. It takes more time, but the result is still great.

I know it may come as a shock to you, but babies love to be swaddled! It is the secret of them (and you as a parent also) getting a good night sleep. Why do they love to be swaddled, you may ask? Well, because it reminds him of a very pleasant place that he misses so much, your womb. Being swaddled in baby blankets offers him the same sensation as when he was inside you. He feels safe and secure in those moments because all the extra space surrounding him tends to get him scared. I think I convinced you to swaddle your baby in baby blankets every night from now on, until he gets old, at least, so here is the best way that I think the swaddling should be done.

Lay on the bed a baby blanket that is big enough to fit your little one.

Now fold one of the blanket’s corners to the one that opposes it. The result should be something close to a triangle. The images will clarify this for you:)

It’s time to put the baby on the center of the blanket with his shoulders placed on the same level as the edges of the “triangle”.

Once the baby is sitting on the blanket, hold his left arm close to his body and pull the right side of the blanket over him and tuck it under his body. In the same time, the right arm of the baby should remain as before.

The next step is to fold the point of the triangle baby blanket over the baby’s feet, after making sure that nothing is creating any discomfort for him.

Now you have to fold the left side of the blanket after you assured yourself that the baby’s right arm is close to his body. Pull the left corner over the baby’s body and wrap it and tuck it behind him.

All that you have to do now to end the swaddling process is to make sure that the blanket is tight enough.

See how easy that was? Are you swaddling your babies in baby blankets when you put them to sleep?

Kathy, Ontario, Oregon: Of course I swaddle my baby in baby blankets when I put them to sleep, especially at this early age (5 months). And I also think that this method is OK.

Linda, Jackson, Mississippi: That’s exactly how I swaddle little Jimmy. He remains quiet for the whole night.

Denise, LA, California: Can you tell me a mother that doesn’t swaddle her baby in baby blankets in our days? Everyone does that and there are not that many ways to do it. Mostly this one, that is also the best.

It’s time for me to show you another way you can make your very own personalized baby blankets without sewing. This method is also very easy and requires no big effort. This is how it goes.

The things that you will need to make this baby blanket are:

Pieces of fleece in different colors

A tape measure

And scissors

These are the steps you have to follow:

For the blanket that I made I used fleece in only two colors, with a size of two yards for each. You can use more and you will see in this post why. First, cut the pieces of fleece into eight inch squares. The number of 8 inch pieces depend on the size that you’ll want the blanket to have. For a perfect 8 inch length, use a piece of cardboard of the same size. Place it on the fleece and cut around the cardboard, but make sure your result is a square.

Now it’s time to cut out every corner of the 8 inch squares. The length of the cuts should be of 2 inches, both on the bottom left and right. This should be done every corner from all the 8 inch squares. When all your pieces will look like the one in this picture, it is time to cut the fringes.

The fringes that I usually do are, like you can see in the picture below, 2 inches length and 1/2 inches wide. You will get about eight fringes for each side.

Now that you have all of your pieces for the baby blanket with the fringes cut, you have to tie them together. Put two pieces close to one another and start to tie the fringes. Because it is a pattern, remember to have the two pieces in different colors! This is the moment when you can get really creative. Your baby blankets will look even better if your pieces of fleece will be in more than two colors. This is how I tie the fringes together: the fringe from the top right of one of the squares is going to be tied with a fringe from the top left side of the other square. The knot that I used was a double one, because it is more safe when I wash the blanket. You have to continue with this pattern for the whole blanket, with the rest of the remaining squares.

Once the blanket has the size that you want, knot together the fringes that are on the exterior sides of the blanket. But you can also leave the fringes as they are; it is all up to you.

As you can see, these are very easy to make baby blankets, that give you the opportunity to choose the aspect of the blanket, it’s colors and also,it requires no sewing. As you can see, my blanket turned out really well. How about yours?

It’s time for a new lesson on how to make your own baby blankets. We had some great tips for you until now and we want to continue in the same manner. Because the summer is knocking at our doors, you wouldn’t want your baby to sweat or be hot during this season. We’ll show you how to sew summer light baby blankets. And, also, it can make a great gift.

Here are the things that you will need

Lightweight fabric (fleece is excellent for this job) in a bright color for one side of the baby blanket

For the other side of the blanket, use a color that blends with the first one

Thread

Scissors and pins

For the edges of the blanket, we would need some ribbon

These are the steps for the making of the summer baby blanket

I assume you already have the two pieces of fabric that will soon make the baby blanket. Make sure that the fabric is light soft fleece. Put the two pieces of material one on top of each other. Make sure they stay together and don’t move by using some pins. With a sewing machine, sew around the edges of the soon-to-be fleece baby blanket. Once you have sewed all four sides of the blanket, it’s time for the ribbon to be sewed. The process is similar, with the sewing machine.

I think this is the easiest blanket we showed you how to do so far. If you want to make the summer baby blanket more interesting, you can have some printings on one side of the blanket before sewing it. The baby’s name or a cartoon character would be good options. As usual, let’s hear some words from mothers that have tried this method and see how they made their own summer baby blankets.

If you do not have the time to make these summer baby blankets yourself, even though the process is incredibly easy and you want to focus the time on your baby, you can always buy them.

We showed you until now a couple of ideas of personalized baby blankets and thought you how to make them. We also mentioned many times that you can have these blankets made for your baby or you can offer them as presents at baby showers or baby birthdays. We will focus in this post on the last part and we’ll teach you how to use the baby blanket as a gift-wrap! I know that many of you probably use gift bags but here is another way you can give the gift a special look (and add another present to the package also).

You will need:

The baby blanket and the gift, of course:)

2 inches wide o satin ribbon

Scissors

And a small rattle of stuffed animal

Follow these steps to wrap the gift with a baby blanket

First you have to choose a baby blanket that has the right size to be used as a gift-wrap. Lay the blanket with the side that you want to be on the exterior face down. Gather the baby gifts, group them and have them arranged in a position that will make the wrapping easier. Remember to place them in the center of the blanket. Now, the edges of the baby blanket have to be folded around the gifts. Make sure you tuck the edges in and under the gift so it is safe from falling off. Basically, you have to think that the blanket is wrapping paper. The process is the same.

Once the folding is done, cut a good piece of ribbon that is enough to wrap around the present vertically and horizontally (you will need to save some of the ribbon’s length for the bow, so make sure you will have the right length from your first cut).

Your next step is to lay the wrapped gift down, with the top facing up. Place the ribbon on the gift and wrap it around until the underside. When you get there, twist the two ends together at once and go with them at the top of the gift. They meet again, so now it’s time to tie them together. Use a double know, so they are secure enough and will hold under the weight of the package. One on of the ribbon’s tail, attach the stuffed animal and then make a big a beautiful bow.

Every mother want’s their babies to sit still, maybe take a nap and not cry, especially when they are in public places, like church, on a plane or bus. Well, guess what? You can train them to do that. Using their baby blankets. In this post, we want to show you a method on how to blanket train you baby that worked for a lot of mommies.

Baby blanket training steps

What you have to do first is choosing a comfortable blanket. Try using the same blanket for all the training sessions until your child grows a little bit older. That way, he will develop a reflex and he will know when he sees that particular blanket that it’s time for him to sit still.

Now you have to choose some toys that your baby loves. Make sure that they don’t make any disturbing sounds. Have a bag full of them, because children love diversity. Also, use those toys only when you blanket training him.

The training process should begin at an early age. When he is old enough to check out his surroundings, you can put him on the baby blanket, where he should spend a good amount of time. But when he grows older, don’t over react, or he will get easily bored and start crying. More important is for him to take walks and learn new stuff then sitting still on a blanket, isn’t it?

Every day, you should put him on the blanket and give him the quiet toys that he likes. You can also try putting him to sleep (sing to him or simply talk). That way he will later associate the blanket with sleeping time.

You will have to repeat these steps for a long period of time. Remember that he is not able to understand what you want from him at a very early age, but if you have patience, results will show up in the end. Of course, he will want to get off from the baby blanket when he will be able to crawl, but you can always put him back on it and tell him “no“. In time, he will figure out that the blanket is the place where he has to stay:).

Here are some extra tips about blanket training

Results only come if you are consistent. It is not something that happens over night, so be patient. Do not force your baby, do not get angry so he will do things because he is frightened and do not ask him for things that he can’t accomplish just yet.

Is is a lot more difficult to blanket train a one year old baby. So, start the training when he is a only a couple of months old.

If you want your baby to sit still at church, create a similar environment. Play a CD with religious music and set up some chairs next to the blanket.

Remember that baby blankets training also depends on the baby’s personality, so results may vary.

We wish you all the best of luck and feel free to tell us if these methods worked for you. If not, what did?

We continue our “how to make baby blankets” course with another great lesson about creating your baby great personalized baby blankets. No sewing is needed (young mommies are thrilled, probably) and they are very easy to make.

The tools that you will need for the making of the baby blanket:

30 x 40 inches piece of fabric (I used fleece for mine). The color is your choice.

Straight pin

Small paintbrush

Sharp scissors

Ruler

Masking tape

Fabric paint (again, your choice)

Alphabet letter stamp

Shape stamp (I used a flower shape stamp)

Let the “personalizing” begin!

A 30 inch long piece of masking tape in needed. Along one of the edges mark with a ruler 0,5 inches intervals.

About 2,5 inches from the 30 inches edge of the baby blanket, place the masking tape. Because it will be used as a mark to make the fringes, be sure that the tape is stretched.

Now you will have to cut the 0,5 inches fringes along the side of the blanket’s edge.

The same steps have to be followed for the other side of the personalized baby blanket.

The center of one fringed side has to be marked with a pin 2 inches from the top of the fringe.

Let’s say you want to write your baby’s name initials on the blanket. For this step, you have to apply paint to the baby’s letter stamp initial using a brush that has to be pressed carefully onto the blanket. Above the pin, you have to stamp the baby’s middle initial, and on the sides the first and last initials.

After this, stamp the figures that you chose (I for one went with flowers) on the sides of the monogram initials (you can also paint his name on the baby blanket, it’s all up to you, the process is the same). The colors of the figures are up to you as well.

I trimmed the flowers with small dots of paint (inside the flower and outside of it and that was it!

Of course, there are many many other ways how you can make personalized baby blankets. Stay tuned for new tips on making your own baby blankets. Until then, let’s see what mommies around the US have to say about the baby blankets that they’ve made.

Jessica, Carson City, Nevada: I like to make little Timothy’s baby blankets myself because they are easy to do and the cost is extremely low. The one’s that you buy in stores are way too expensive, and let’s not forget the economical climate that we are living in.

Danielle, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma: I like to paint little red hearts on the baby blankets that I make. I love them and my baby does too.

Mary, Austin, Texas: Fringes. I’m crazy about fringes. Every personalized baby blanket that I make has to have them. And of course, the colors of the paint are usually green and red.
