I showed you in the previous post how you can easily make baby receiving blankets. Hoping that lesson was a good one, I have something else prepared for you. I want to give you some great tips on how to use the many baby receiving blankets that you probably have in your cupboard.

Of course, their main purpose is to keep you baby warm. If your baby is a little bit cold, you can lay an extra one on him until the temperature of the body gets to a comfortable level; then you can remove it.

When it comes to swaddling a baby, that’s what baby receiving blankets are:). Read our advices on how to swaddle a baby in a baby blanket to learn more about this.

Baby receiving blankets can be also used as burp cloths. They are larger than normal burp cloths and that means that they can cover and protect better your clothes from the mess that a baby might make when you a burping him.

Another great way that I used baby receiving blankets in was for cleaning the milk that my baby dropped while I was breast feeding him. Also, with another blanket, I created a cover to get some privacy while I the baby was eating.

You can use a light blanket to cover your baby when the sun is too hot and that should also protect him from insects.

If you want to change your baby on a public surface and you want to be sure that he won’t get any germs, lay a baby receiving blanket on that surface and so, your baby will be ok.

Playtime can also take place on a baby blanket, especially if the playground is not in your house where you are sure that everything is clean.

You can roll baby receiving blankets up and use them to position your baby in a car seat or baby crib. Place a rolled blanket on each side of the baby’s head in order to make sure that it stays straight in the car seat. Also, if you place the rolled baby blankets on each side of the baby’s body when he is in the crib, this will prevent him from rolling on the side or on his tummy.

I know that these are just a few ways you can use your baby blankets. If you want to point out other methods, please feel free to share them with us.

In this post I want to teach you another way you can make you own baby blankets. This time, I’ll let you know how to create baby receiving blankets. Most of them that are available in stores don’t meet your expectations or are too expensive; so why not making them yourself? The process won’t take long, approximately 20 or 30 minutes and you will be able to decorate them just the way you want and your baby will have unique and personalized baby blankets.

You will need to make a baby receiving blanket:

a soft piece of fabric

a measuring tape

a sewing machine

and about a half of hour of your time:)

Baby receiving blankets usually come in two sizes: 35 square inches for babies that have less than 3 months and 45 square inches for babies older than 4 months.
When I want to make baby receiving blankets, first I think of how many do I need. I usually do two at one time, because it is easier after I cut the material and get two pieces of fabric suitable for two blankets. Establish the size of the blankets and cut the fabric. Remember the sizes that I mentioned earlier.

Once you have the fabrics ready, you’ll have to curve the edges. You can easily do that with the help of a large circular lid. Place it on the corner of the soon-to-be blanket and with a piece of chalk outline the the outer edge of your lid. Then cut the corner following the chalk line. Repeat this process for all four corners.

Now you have to do the edging. This can be done by folding the bottom edges of the blanket and sewing them with the sewing machine so the the fabric won’t fray.

Congratulation, your baby receiving blankets are done now. If want to give them a more unique look, you can sew something cute on them like your baby’s name, flowers or different characters. Be creative and the result will be something amazing that your baby will love!

Let’s see what mothers all around the US have to say when it comes to making their very own baby receiving blankets.

Cindy, Memphis, Tennessee: I used to buy baby blankets when I was a young mother. When I saw that they tend to get pretty expensive, I started making my own. I love to personalize my baby blankets with all kind of cartoon characters that my little boy likes.

Jenna, Lincoln, Nebraska: I tried this method and indeed, it is really fast to do. The personalized baby receiving blanket turned out just great!

Christy, Phoenix, Arizona: Yes, this is a great way to make baby receiving blankets. I do not own a sewing machine, so I sew the edges by hand. It takes more time, but the result is still great.

It’s time for me to show you another way you can make your very own personalized baby blankets without sewing. This method is also very easy and requires no big effort. This is how it goes.

The things that you will need to make this baby blanket are:

Pieces of fleece in different colors

A tape measure

And scissors

These are the steps you have to follow:

For the blanket that I made I used fleece in only two colors, with a size of two yards for each. You can use more and you will see in this post why. First, cut the pieces of fleece into eight inch squares. The number of 8 inch pieces depend on the size that you’ll want the blanket to have. For a perfect 8 inch length, use a piece of cardboard of the same size. Place it on the fleece and cut around the cardboard, but make sure your result is a square.

Now it’s time to cut out every corner of the 8 inch squares. The length of the cuts should be of 2 inches, both on the bottom left and right. This should be done every corner from all the 8 inch squares. When all your pieces will look like the one in this picture, it is time to cut the fringes.

The fringes that I usually do are, like you can see in the picture below, 2 inches length and 1/2 inches wide. You will get about eight fringes for each side.

Now that you have all of your pieces for the baby blanket with the fringes cut, you have to tie them together. Put two pieces close to one another and start to tie the fringes. Because it is a pattern, remember to have the two pieces in different colors! This is the moment when you can get really creative. Your baby blankets will look even better if your pieces of fleece will be in more than two colors. This is how I tie the fringes together: the fringe from the top right of one of the squares is going to be tied with a fringe from the top left side of the other square. The knot that I used was a double one, because it is more safe when I wash the blanket. You have to continue with this pattern for the whole blanket, with the rest of the remaining squares.

Once the blanket has the size that you want, knot together the fringes that are on the exterior sides of the blanket. But you can also leave the fringes as they are; it is all up to you.

As you can see, these are very easy to make baby blankets, that give you the opportunity to choose the aspect of the blanket, it’s colors and also,it requires no sewing. As you can see, my blanket turned out really well. How about yours?
