In this post I want to teach you another way you can make you own baby blankets. This time, I’ll let you know how to create baby receiving blankets. Most of them that are available in stores don’t meet your expectations or are too expensive; so why not making them yourself? The process won’t take long, approximately 20 or 30 minutes and you will be able to decorate them just the way you want and your baby will have unique and personalized baby blankets.

You will need to make a baby receiving blanket:

a soft piece of fabric

a measuring tape

a sewing machine

and about a half of hour of your time:)

Baby receiving blankets usually come in two sizes: 35 square inches for babies that have less than 3 months and 45 square inches for babies older than 4 months.
When I want to make baby receiving blankets, first I think of how many do I need. I usually do two at one time, because it is easier after I cut the material and get two pieces of fabric suitable for two blankets. Establish the size of the blankets and cut the fabric. Remember the sizes that I mentioned earlier.

Once you have the fabrics ready, you’ll have to curve the edges. You can easily do that with the help of a large circular lid. Place it on the corner of the soon-to-be blanket and with a piece of chalk outline the the outer edge of your lid. Then cut the corner following the chalk line. Repeat this process for all four corners.

Now you have to do the edging. This can be done by folding the bottom edges of the blanket and sewing them with the sewing machine so the the fabric won’t fray.

Congratulation, your baby receiving blankets are done now. If want to give them a more unique look, you can sew something cute on them like your baby’s name, flowers or different characters. Be creative and the result will be something amazing that your baby will love!

Let’s see what mothers all around the US have to say when it comes to making their very own baby receiving blankets.

Cindy, Memphis, Tennessee: I used to buy baby blankets when I was a young mother. When I saw that they tend to get pretty expensive, I started making my own. I love to personalize my baby blankets with all kind of cartoon characters that my little boy likes.

Jenna, Lincoln, Nebraska: I tried this method and indeed, it is really fast to do. The personalized baby receiving blanket turned out just great!

Christy, Phoenix, Arizona: Yes, this is a great way to make baby receiving blankets. I do not own a sewing machine, so I sew the edges by hand. It takes more time, but the result is still great.

It’s time for a new lesson on how to make your own baby blankets. We had some great tips for you until now and we want to continue in the same manner. Because the summer is knocking at our doors, you wouldn’t want your baby to sweat or be hot during this season. We’ll show you how to sew summer light baby blankets. And, also, it can make a great gift.

Here are the things that you will need

Lightweight fabric (fleece is excellent for this job) in a bright color for one side of the baby blanket

For the other side of the blanket, use a color that blends with the first one

Thread

Scissors and pins

For the edges of the blanket, we would need some ribbon

These are the steps for the making of the summer baby blanket

I assume you already have the two pieces of fabric that will soon make the baby blanket. Make sure that the fabric is light soft fleece. Put the two pieces of material one on top of each other. Make sure they stay together and don’t move by using some pins. With a sewing machine, sew around the edges of the soon-to-be fleece baby blanket. Once you have sewed all four sides of the blanket, it’s time for the ribbon to be sewed. The process is similar, with the sewing machine.

I think this is the easiest blanket we showed you how to do so far. If you want to make the summer baby blanket more interesting, you can have some printings on one side of the blanket before sewing it. The baby’s name or a cartoon character would be good options. As usual, let’s hear some words from mothers that have tried this method and see how they made their own summer baby blankets.

If you do not have the time to make these summer baby blankets yourself, even though the process is incredibly easy and you want to focus the time on your baby, you can always buy them.

We showed you until now a couple of ideas of personalized baby blankets and thought you how to make them. We also mentioned many times that you can have these blankets made for your baby or you can offer them as presents at baby showers or baby birthdays. We will focus in this post on the last part and we’ll teach you how to use the baby blanket as a gift-wrap! I know that many of you probably use gift bags but here is another way you can give the gift a special look (and add another present to the package also).

You will need:

The baby blanket and the gift, of course:)

2 inches wide o satin ribbon

Scissors

And a small rattle of stuffed animal

Follow these steps to wrap the gift with a baby blanket

First you have to choose a baby blanket that has the right size to be used as a gift-wrap. Lay the blanket with the side that you want to be on the exterior face down. Gather the baby gifts, group them and have them arranged in a position that will make the wrapping easier. Remember to place them in the center of the blanket. Now, the edges of the baby blanket have to be folded around the gifts. Make sure you tuck the edges in and under the gift so it is safe from falling off. Basically, you have to think that the blanket is wrapping paper. The process is the same.

Once the folding is done, cut a good piece of ribbon that is enough to wrap around the present vertically and horizontally (you will need to save some of the ribbon’s length for the bow, so make sure you will have the right length from your first cut).

Your next step is to lay the wrapped gift down, with the top facing up. Place the ribbon on the gift and wrap it around until the underside. When you get there, twist the two ends together at once and go with them at the top of the gift. They meet again, so now it’s time to tie them together. Use a double know, so they are secure enough and will hold under the weight of the package. One on of the ribbon’s tail, attach the stuffed animal and then make a big a beautiful bow.

These are the steps that you have to follow if you want to use baby blankets to wrap baby shower gifts. It is a great idea and the impact that it has on the persons that receive these present is always positive!

We continue our “how to make baby blankets” course with another great lesson about creating your baby great personalized baby blankets. No sewing is needed (young mommies are thrilled, probably) and they are very easy to make.

The tools that you will need for the making of the baby blanket:

30 x 40 inches piece of fabric (I used fleece for mine). The color is your choice.

Straight pin

Small paintbrush

Sharp scissors

Ruler

Masking tape

Fabric paint (again, your choice)

Alphabet letter stamp

Shape stamp (I used a flower shape stamp)

Let the “personalizing” begin!

A 30 inch long piece of masking tape in needed. Along one of the edges mark with a ruler 0,5 inches intervals.

About 2,5 inches from the 30 inches edge of the baby blanket, place the masking tape. Because it will be used as a mark to make the fringes, be sure that the tape is stretched.

Now you will have to cut the 0,5 inches fringes along the side of the blanket’s edge.

The same steps have to be followed for the other side of the personalized baby blanket.

The center of one fringed side has to be marked with a pin 2 inches from the top of the fringe.

Let’s say you want to write your baby’s name initials on the blanket. For this step, you have to apply paint to the baby’s letter stamp initial using a brush that has to be pressed carefully onto the blanket. Above the pin, you have to stamp the baby’s middle initial, and on the sides the first and last initials.

After this, stamp the figures that you chose (I for one went with flowers) on the sides of the monogram initials (you can also paint his name on the baby blanket, it’s all up to you, the process is the same). The colors of the figures are up to you as well.

I trimmed the flowers with small dots of paint (inside the flower and outside of it and that was it!

Of course, there are many many other ways how you can make personalized baby blankets. Stay tuned for new tips on making your own baby blankets. Until then, let’s see what mommies around the US have to say about the baby blankets that they’ve made.

Jessica, Carson City, Nevada: I like to make little Timothy’s baby blankets myself because they are easy to do and the cost is extremely low. The one’s that you buy in stores are way too expensive, and let’s not forget the economical climate that we are living in.

Danielle, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma: I like to paint little red hearts on the baby blankets that I make. I love them and my baby does too.

Mary, Austin, Texas: Fringes. I’m crazy about fringes. Every personalized baby blanket that I make has to have them. And of course, the colors of the paint are usually green and red.

We talked in the previous post about the things you have to keep in mind when you want to buy your baby a blanket. But what if you are a person that holds the gift of knitting and sewing?

The answer is easy. You can make your own baby blanket, with fabrics, colors and printings at your choice.

In the first place, you have to choose about 12 oz. medium weight acrylic yarn. Soft and in pastel colors I think would be the right choice.

When it comes to knitting needles, i suggest using sizes 10 and 11. If you want to be sure of the one that suites you the best, knit some practice shapes with the both of them and after that you’ll know which one is more suitable for your baby blankets knitting process.

Don’t forget that some knitting stitch markers always come in hand. You will see below why.

Remember that this article is for those of you who know how to handle a knitting needle. This is how I think it will work best and this is the method that I used several times when I knitted baby blankets:

A. You have to cast on 120 stitches and make the border of the blanket by knitting 10 rows.

B. Try using this method when doing the next 1 to 10 rows. Row 1: Knit 7, then with the marker do the side border. To the last 7 stitches purl, mark the spot then Knit 7. On the second row, simply knit. For row 3, knit 7, purl to marker, the place another marker and knit 7. Row 5 is identical to row 3: knit 7, purl to marker, the place another marker and knit 7. For rows 6 to 10, Knit.

This method should be repeated in a total of 14 times, but be careful to end it with row 5. 10 rows should be knitted as in section A and then you can cast off the knitting. After you have read this article, knitting baby blankets doesn’t seem like a difficult job after all, right? Now you can make on your own perfect baby blankets for your little one or personalized baby blankets for when you need a present for baby showers.

For every mother, her baby’s protection against cold is very important. We are going to help you take care of this problem with advices and tips on how to choose the perfect blanket for your little one.

Choosing appropriate baby blankets may seem as an easy job. It may be, but keep in mind that there are some details that you must take into consideration before making the decision of purchasing such an item.

Here is a list of questions that you should ask before buying a baby blanket:

- What size is the blanket, is it appropriate for your baby, is he fully covered by it?
- What shape does the blanket has? Is it a squarely, round or other geometrical shapes?
- What kind of fabric was used for making the blanket? Synthetic, organic or natural?
- What color should the baby blanket have? Does it match the baby crib or his clothes?:) For a future fashionable baby, that is very important (blue for baby boys and pink for little girls). Also, don’t forget that colors may influence upon your baby’s mood.
- Can the blanket be personalized with maybe a photo of your choice or some other designs?
- Do you want a double, simple or a quilted baby blanket?
- You would rather buy a two-sides blanket or not? Maybe in different colors.
- Is the material of the blanket napless or not? That is a very important detail when it comes to washing.
- If you choose to buy personalized baby blankets with different stickers or printings on it, can the paint harm your baby if he bites it or? We all know that babies love to chew on all sort of stuff. What if he is allergic to the chemicals from that print?
- Also, is the paint firmly attached to the wire? What happens to it when you wash the blanket?
- What weight should the blanket have? You should always choose a lighter one, because babies hate sleeping uncomfortable. And if their sleep is agitated, yours will be too. 500 grams is the best weight for a blanket.
- How would you prefer to wash the baby blankets? By hand or with the help of an washing machine?
- What’s the easiest way to dry a blanket after washing it so it won’t have too many wrinkles that could also influence your baby’s sleep?
- Do you want a blanket that requires ironing after washing or not?
- Does the fabric allows stains to be removed with no extra effort?
- Very important: for how many times can you wash the blanket and the material remains the same as it was when you bought it?
- What is the life cycle of the blanket? Your baby won’t be needing it for a very long time maybe, but who knows what the parents decide about having another child:)
- If you buy a baby blanket with purls, remember what we talked about earlier: baby have the tendency of putting everything in their mouth. Are baby blankets with purls really a must have?
- Babies also move a lot in their sleep. So you do not want to buy a blanket that has a tendency to slip from the child’s body, but remain in a stable position.
- How can the blanket be stored and how much space inside the closet requires?
- Very important, are the blankets assuring the baby the comfort that he needs? And in case he wets the bed, does it prevent him from exposing himself to the fluids?
- How warm are the baby blankets that you wish to purchase? When you feel them, the surface is warm or cold?
- Does the blanket allows air circulation or is it almost airtight?
- Is the baby exposed to any dangers such as suffocating himself by accident or over-heating when being covered by the blanket?
- If you have twins, do you find suitable a blanket for the both of them in case they are sharing the same crib?
- Most importantly, can you afford the type of baby blanket that you wish for your little ones to have? Or what other options to buy one do you have, except the ride to the store. Maybe with just a few clicks, the blanket can come to you.

Now, if you have read carefully all of these questions, I’m sure that you will take into consideration many of the things we mentioned about and you will realize that buying baby blankets is not so easy after all. We will try to answer for you to every question from the ones above and help you in making the perfect choice.
